DEPUTY VESSEL/PROJECT MANAGER - JOB DESCRIPTION
Reports To: Operations Manager
The role will be based at UK Docks Head office located in South Shields, with travel to UK and shipyards worldwide.
Reports directly to the Operations Manager for assisting vessel manager overseeing all Operational matters of UK docks Marine Services (North) Ltd. Will be customer-focused, possess excellent team-working and communication skills and the ability to facilitate change and motivate others. Additionally, will have significant operational management experience and a proven track record in improvement development in the marine sector.
Personal Criteria (Qualification and Attributes:
The Deputy Vessel/Project Manager should possess a Certificate of Competency as Deck or Engineer Officer and/or relevant experience of seagoing vessels, preferably in a supervisory role.
You must be highly professional, focused and capable of working in an extremely busy department and required to work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
The ability to produce accurate and professional work to a high standard whilst working under pressure is essential. Excellent team-working and communication skills having the ability to facilitate change and motivate others.
You will ensure the day-to-day effective management in collaboration with the designated operational vessel manager(s).
Key Accountabilities
You will assist in the safe overall project management and technical operations of your assigned projects on assigned vessels. This includes overseeing and assisting in the safe daily operations of maintenance and repair, budgeting, survey schedules, general on-board assessment of vessels, inspections and docking, etc.
You must –
Adhere to timely planning, sourcing, and deployment of project service providers/assistants.
Attend all project client meetings as the lead project manager, being supported by your project team and vessel manager for that vessel.
Coordinate with the nominated paint supplier, vessel manger and other internalVstakeholders, to finalise the paint requirements, as per agreed paint strategy.
Evaluate quality of project based on agreed and established client requirements.
Be involved in shipyard evaluations and driving internal process optimisation.
Analyse previous project/docking costs and invoices to identify cost optimisation opportunities.
Provide inputs on the invoicing and negotiation of final invoice with all OEM, 3rd party’s and Shipyard.
Supervise repairs and provide advice to contractors and ships’ staff during maintenance.
Ensure that the Company are provided with technical and engineering solutions to problems in a timely fashion. Explore and implement new concepts and enhancements in the development of existing and projected fleet to increase the company’s efficiency and profitability.
Continuously monitor the Company’s operational key performance indicators, ensuring satisfactory delivery of customer and Company requirements.
Liaise with internal and external customers on technical and operational matters including vessel performance etc.
Provide and compile documented reports upon completion of projects, maintenance periods, including summaries of works performed, operational budgets, and actual expenditures.
Identify and source technical and operational supplies required for the vessels and ensure the rates are most economical to achieve the optimum vessels’ performance consistent with their commercial obligations
Undertake any other Technical related assignments as and when required.
Deputy Vessel/Project Manager shall visit assigned vessel(s) a minimum of four (4) times per annum.
Health, Quality, Safety and Environmental protection Management:
Promotion of the SMS Policy and culture on board vessels.
Demonstrate commitment to safety and environmental excellence, by behaviour.
Report to the DPA on matters that deviate from the SMS procedures.
Suggest to the DPA possible improvements/modifications of the SMS.
Ensure that the working conditions on-board are safe and report any items that are deemed by you to be unsafe.
Perform internal audits.
Investigate accidents, incidents and serious near misses.
Review all reports of non-conformities, incidents or near misses received by your assigned vessel(s) and follow-up the implementation and verification of corrective/preventive actions process inclusive their effectiveness.
Participate in the Emergency Response Team, as delegated by the Operational Manager.
Always work closely with the Vessel Manager/HSE Management team to ensure a smooth and successful implementation of QHSE system and policies for the Company.
Technical:
Assist in implementation of preventive maintenance of hull, main machinery, deck machinery, electrical equipment, etc, as described in the PMS and set by the Class/Flag State requirements.
Monitor the Class and Flag State requirements and plan/supervise the required surveys ensuring that the certification of assigned vessels is maintained in accordance with the relevant Class and Flag State requirements.
Keep abreast with the Statutory and Class regulations and standards.
Attend and if necessary, sail with the vessels to solve operational problems on-board as required.
Analyse the results of assigned vessels’ inspections and following-up all reports of vessels’ condition and performance.
Assist shipboard personnel to eliminate problems and/or malfunctions.
Develop efficient repair methods, in cooperation with the Operations Manager, when evaluating/selecting quality sub-contractors.
Attending repairs and Dry Dockings:
Prepare and formulate repair specifications in accordance with target dates from Assistant Operations Manager, taking into account the requirements of Class Society, Owners’ and Company’s standards, PMS reports, deck, tank/hold and machinery condition reports, defect reports, the Captains and Chief Engineer’s reports and National, Port State and International legislation.
Once the Vessel Manager(s) have populated the docking specification(s), the Operations Manager will review to ensure a consistent quality and content of the specification is met prior to distribution for tender.
Liaise with the Assistant Operations Manager evaluating repair quotations, select repair Companies and location of the repairs, based on the “best quality of works”/“cost” relation, taking into account the vessels’ itinerary and Contract obligations.
Monitor and process the Planned Maintenance System for life saving appliances and firefighting equipment.
Process all spare parts requisitions received from vessels and monitor the efficient and timely supply of all spares required for the proper maintenance and safe operation of the vessels.
Ensure that the purchase orders for mechanical, electrical, main, auxiliary and ancillary equipment spares/stores, dry docking, repairs and repairs for insurance are reviewed for accuracy, approved and propose to the purchasing department in adequate time to ensure that there are no consequential impacts to the vessel(s) operational capability or availability.
Personnel:
Monitor the seafarer’s level of on-board training and the monitoring and execution of scheduled drills.
Monitor and evaluate the performance of the seagoing personnel and report accordingly to the Operations and Contract Department
Familiarise new shore staff and provide in-house training to the Captains, Chief Engineer’s and other seagoing personnel with the requirements of the SMS related to the operational and technical aspects of the vessel and the PMS.
Participate in the briefing and de-briefing of Captains, Chief Engineers, etc. before and after appointment, as per the SMS relevant procedure.
Identify the need for crew training and liaise with HR / Operations and Commercial Department to see it actioned

JOB OPPORTUNITY: MARINE ENGINEER
(Cremyll, Cornwall)
UK Docks Mashfords based at Cremyll in Cornwall is seeking a full-time Marine Engineer to join its team. This is a permanent position working 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Overtime will be required to meet contract deadlines when necessary.
Duties:
To service marine engines and propulsion systems.
To install mechanical and hydraulic systems.
To test and commission installations, ensuring equipment is operational and satisfactory to all requirements.
To work on all vessel types up to 300 tonnes including but not limited to Ribs and workboats.
All work to be carried out to a high standard.
Assist the engineering foreman in training engineering apprentices.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
· Qualified Engineer with a minimum of 3 years’ experience. Maritime knowledge advantageous.
· Knowledge of jet drive propulsion systems advantageous.
· Ability to work on vessels up to 300 tons, including working afloat.
· Proven knowledge of systems including, fresh water, domestic, saltwater systems, engine cooling, hydraulics, LP air, bilge / grey water and heating systems.
· To be conversant with all aspects of diesel engines including fault finding, maintenance & servicing.
· Proven knowledge of engine / gearbox installation including ancillaries and alignment of engine / gearbox to shafts.
· Familiar with propulsion and steering systems.
· Knowledge of Electrical Installations would be advantageous.
· Security vetting will be required.
· Required to work on MoD sites.
· Expected to work outside normal working hours for slipping and launching vessels
· Boat handling qualifications (Powerboat Level 2 / Day Skipper etc), with commercial endorsement advantageous.
· Driving licence essential.
Pay
· £15.69ph going up to £17.52ph
· 156 Hours leave and Bank holidays
